Reaction, Revolutions and Romanticism

In Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables", set during the June Rebellion of 1832, Fantine sells first her two front teeth and then her hair, and ultimately herself into prostitution to save her child. "Waterloo teeth" were the first type of dentures, made from the teeth of the poor or deceased soldiers.
